ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, February 21, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-general for Côte d’Ivoire, Bert Koenders, received, on Tuesday 21 February 2012, a delegation from the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, led by its representative in Côte d’Ivoire, Ludovic De Lys.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. De Lys explained that the meeting focused on current discussions within UNICEF on its contribution to various programmes and on the efforts being made by the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) and others, particularly the Government, to consolidate peace in the country.
The issue of UNICEF’s role in peace-education programmes within the present context was also discussed. “We have also discussed this with our natural partners of the National Education Ministry so, through this meeting, we simply wanted to hear the Special Representative’s views on the broad orientations that UNICEF could give to its activities in the years to come,” the UNICEF representative stressed.
Mr. De Lys, who stated that UNICEF and the Ministry of Education could have an important role to play through peace education programmes, said he was satisfied at his discussions with Mr.Koenders.
“Today we do not necessarily have the resources needed for an ambitious programme, but through this meeting, we are convinced that we can mobilize more resources in that area,” he said. “And that is what we are going to work on in the months to come, evidently with his support, we hope,” added the UNICEF Representative.
