SABC to broadcast major sporting events

The SABC has secured a limited, free-to-air broadcasting rights package for three major sporting events.

Under the agreement reached with rights-holder SuperSport, the SABC would broadcast the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, the Rugby Championship, and the Castle Lager Inbound Test Series, it said.

“With these events happening around the same time, we made a decision that we would try our best to get these broadcasting rights, as the nation of South Africa … deserves the right to watch their favourite sporting teams,” SABC acting chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng said in a statement.

“We believe that the public will also enjoy the high-quality programming that has been put together to support the respective tournaments.”

The SABC would broadcast live all three of the Proteas’ matches in the group stage, one semifinal and the final. It would also feature daily television highlights of all the other matches in the tournament.

Its 2000 FM radio station would carry all the cricket matches live, with updates and scores on other SABC ALS radio stations.

Both rugby tournaments would also be carried, but the television coverage of the South African inbound tests would be delayed until after the final whistle, and only the radio broadcasts would be live.

“We are pleased to have concluded an arrangement with the SABC regarding this content on commercial terms which are satisfactory to both parties,” said SuperSport International CEO Happy Ntshingila.
