Will it be Mweene or Sandilands?

Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has questioned the senseless buying spree at his former club and described it as a circus.

This week Sundowns acquired Zambia’s number one goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene, from Free State Stars to their already congested ’keepers’ department.

Other shot stoppers on their roster are Bafana Bafana’s number two, Wayne Sandilands, Thela Ngobeni, Dennis Onyango and Glenn Verbauwhede. Long-serving goalie Calvin Marlin is expected to leave at the end of the month.

Baloyi said Mweene’s arrival could only mean one thing: one goalkeeper’s international career will suffer.

Also, logic dictates that Sundowns cannot pay the reported R5 million for Mweene only to keep him on the bench. The 28-year-old Mweene will compete with Sandilands (29) for the starting berth at the Brazilians.

Both goalminders cannot afford to warm the bench as it would affect their careers at international level.

But erstwhile Bafana keeper Baloyi said he had nothing against his former side, but said “some things did not make sense”.

“I thought Pitso was going to stop these senseless spending sprees, but clearly I was wrong,” said the now-retired Baloyi.

“When I went there (at Sundowns), I found another Bafana goalkeeper, Andre (Arendse), and they brought another Venezuelan goalkeeper (Rafael Dudamel) so it does not surprise me at all.”

Baloyi had advice for Sandilands: “I have been there before and all I would say to him is that the solution is not to run away but to fight on the field. He needs to be strong. Whether people like him or not, Sandilands has been on top of his game for the past two seasons.”

Baloyi said the country would be disadvantaged if Sandilands was not to feature regularly for the club.

Although he is not guaranteed a starting berth, Baloyi said this did not augur well for up-and-coming goalkeepers from the development structures.
