Nigeria will give support to D-8 says Kigbu, Permanent Sec., Fed. Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Dauda Kigbu has said that Nigeria will give all necessary support to the Eight Developing (D-8) countries to actualize her roadmap 2008-2018 in priority areas such as Trade, Industry, Agriculture, Transportation and Energy.

Mr. Kigbu stated this in his opening remarks to the delegates to the Senior Officials meeting of D-8 at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

Mr. Kigbu who presided over the meeting informed delegates that Nigeria was aware that the Preferential Trade Agreement was a mile stone achievement in the 16 years history of the Eight Developing (D-8) countries for economic cooperation because of its capacity to boost trade and investment among member countries thereby reducing poverty and enriching our people.

He stated that the Preferential Trade Agreement was so dear to Nigeria because it was in consonance with the Transformation Agenda of Mr. Presidential which was aimed at our economy in particular, through non-oil exports.

He therefore, enjoined member countries at the meeting to work assiduously and deliberate on the under listed issues to realize the set goals of the 1st D-8 Trade Ministers Council meeting.
In his remarks, the D-8 Secretary General, Dr. Seyed Ali Mohammed Mousavi thanked the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria especially the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment for the warm reception accorded delegates to the meeting and the wonderful venue in the capital city of Abuja.

Top on the agenda of the Senior Officials meeting today were: consideration and adoption of the draft agenda, presentation of the current state of cut-off date implementation for the first installment of tariff reduction, consideration of the proposal of Bangladesh regarding their request to have 30% Local Value Addition Criteria for LDCs, discussion and consideration of the draft text of “Abuja Declaration” and discussion on the agenda of the First D-8 Trade Ministers Council Meeting as well as presentation and adoption of the report of the Senior Officials meeting for Trade Ministers Council.

The objective of the Senior Officials meeting is to prepare technical inputs for the D-8 1st Trade Ministers Council meeting scheduled to hold Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Abuja,Nigeria.

The main Objective of the Trade Ministers Council meeting is to deliberate and agree on the commencement date for the D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement implementation which was signed in Bali, Indonesia in 2006.  The D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement is an arrangement designed to boost trade and investment among member states namely; (Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey).
