Former television presenter Xolelwa Majeke has begged Eskom and Joburg City Power to turn the lights back on in her R15 million home despite being R38 200 in arrears.
Majeke is desperately worried about her asthmatic child, whose father is Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi.
“She has been lighting candles after they cut the electricity supply to her house, but now the problem is her child, who needs a nebuliser because it is winter,” a source close to Majeke’s family told City Press.
“The child had some complications last week and she sounded very serious when she was talking to us on the phone. When City Power dilly-dallied, she contacted Eskom to reconnect her but nothing has been done so far,” said the source, who asked not to be named.
The former SABC Sports, Al Jazeera and eNCA presenter lives in a house in Fourways, Johannesburg. Last year the house was nearly repossessed after she defaulted on payment. City Press has learnt that she fell on hard times after leaving eNCA, where she was a sports presenter.
Another source with knowledge of the situation said Majeke, who now works at a TV production company in Joburg, may have to sell her house to settle her debts.
“She fears that she will end up failing to pay school fees for her child,” said the second source.
Both of Majeke’s cellphones were not answered and she ignored several text messages sent to both. City Power spokesperson Kgamanyane Stan Maphologela said: “The City of Johannesburg is not at liberty to discuss the accounts of its customers openly in public as this has a legal risk and will compromise the confidentiality clauses contained in our customer agreements.”
Eskom would also not “disclose details”, but said it was “aware of the issue and we do invite the customer to contact us directly”.
