Former president Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela has hit back at his nemesis, AbaThembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, calling him delusional.
Mandla was responding to the king’s statements that he was planning to depose him as the chief of Mvezo.
In an exclusive interview with City Press on Thursday night, Dalindyebo, Madiba’s clan nephew, said Mandla was not the legitimate heir of the
Mandelas and that he would remove him as Mvezo chief, a position he has held since 2007.
But an angry Mandla refused to go out without a fight.
“We all know as the Thembu nation and people of this region that we are dealing with a delusional incumbent who somewhat has been smoking a number of things that are beginning to have an effect on his thinking capacity,” said Mandla.
He said Dalindyebo should not be taken seriously and referred to the king’s threat to secede from South Africa after he was convicted to 15 years in prison on culpable homicide charges by the Mthatha High Court in 2009 – a decision he is currently appealing.
“We fail to understand the things that the king does,” he said, adding that there were processes that ought to be followed when removing a chief.
He said the royal house of Mandela or the Mvezo traditional council had not even discussed the matter and accused the king of jumping the gun.
“It would be wrong for us to continue speculating on issues that have not even been brought before us. We immediately dismiss those issues until they are brought and tabled before us,” said Mandla.
The elderly statesman’s grandson was speaking after issuing 100 blankets to elders in Matyengqina outside Mthatha yesterday as part of his and the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s “operation winter warmth 2013” programme.
He said this was their 67 minutes campaign to honour Madiba and to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day which falls on July 18.
Madiba turns 95 on the day.
Asked if he approved of Dalindyebo’s planned visit to Pretoria to see his grandfather, Mandla refused to comment, saying he had no knowledge of that.
