Former president Nelson Mandela is still responding to the treatment he is receiving at the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria, the presidency has said.
“Former president Nelson Mandela continues to respond to treatment, and is still in a critical but stable condition,” spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement today.
He confirmed that President Jacob Zuma had visited the ailing statesman in hospital earlier in the day. Mandela was spending his 34th day in hospital for treatment of a recurring lung infection.
Zuma’s vehicle drove into the hospital’s Park Street entrance shortly before midday. Four police officers and a hospital security guard manned the entrance on the busy street. All vehicles entering the facility were searched.
Zuma was also at the hospital yesterday, after which he said Mandela was responding to treatment.
