Martha-Renee Kolleh has a unique way of dealing with racists: She’s put up a sign outside her cafe warning that there’s a black woman running the show.

Kolleh, who runs the Yeanon Cafe in the British town of Ossett, told the Independent this week that she put up the sign because of the way some customers reacted to her when they walked in.

The sign reads: “Attention! Everyone be aware, I am a black woman and always will be.

“If you are allergic to black people, don’t come in.”

The Independent reported that Ossett’s population, last recorded during the 2001 Census, stood at 98.9% white.

Kolleh serves a mixture of British, African and Caribbean cuisine at her cafe. Her new sign, she hopes, will prepare customers for what seems to be the shock of their lives.

“When they open the door they will expect to see a black face,” she said during an interview with BBC Radio Leeds. She told the radio station: “I put the sign there because of the way people treat me in Ossett.

“They just open the door of my cafe and, once they take a look at me, they walk out.”

So far, the sign’s received mixed reactions, the Independent reported.

Some people are amused, telling her it is about time she put the sign up, while others “just read it and walk away”, Ossett said.
