Apartheid South Africa ensured that race was used to determine where people lived. Since the dawn of democracy in 1994, there have been shifts to reflect the demographics of the nation. The latest Roots 2013 report indicates that blacks are moving into previously whites-only areas. This is significant as the history – race, income and language – of those suburbs are changing with the times. Here is a look at the changes of some of the nation’s major cities. The report, compiled by TNS Research Surveys, saw close to 30 000 people being interviewed across 115 suburbs of South Africa
