Claims that there are not enough ambulances available in the West Rand district municipality are not supported by facts, the Gauteng health department has said.
Spokesperson Simon Zwane said today there were enough ambulances to serve the area, according to the department’s preliminary investigations.
The Democratic Alliance had claimed that only one ambulance, out of the required 11, was available in the municipality.
However, Zwane said there were two operational ambulances in Mogale City and another two at Randfontein, about 15km away.
“A further two available ambulances are stationed at Yusuf Dadoo Hospital; three available ambulances at Leratong, and four available ambulances in Bekkersdal.”
He said these resources were available to the municipality in the event of a backlog of calls.
Earlier, DA spokesperson Jack Bloom said in a statement there were insufficient ambulances for the West Rand district and that the Gauteng health department needed to urgently provide more ambulances to the area.
