London – More than 150 000 people have viewed a 24-hour livestream of the doorway to the London hospital where the duchess of Cambridge was expected to give birth this month.

The Sun said today it launched the gimmick Wednesday as excitement over the birth mounts across the country.

Kate, the 31-year-old duchess, was expected to give birth in the private Lindo wing of St Mary’s Hospital, where her husband, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, were born.

The media has been camped outside the doorway in sweltering heat since the beginning of the month while the rumoured due date of July 13 has been and gone. Buckingham Palace has refused to confirm a date, saying only that the baby was due in July.

“The tabloids dubbed her Waity Katie,” wrote a Times reporter, referring to the nickname given to the duchess before she finally received a marriage proposal from William. “Now the royal mother-to-be has her revenge.”

So far, there is little to see on the Sun’s livestream.

“Occasionally, a doctor walks into the hospital,” the Times wrote. “Sometimes the police change shift. Once in a while it gets really exciting and a taxi drives past.”
