Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile allegedly hit a wealthy Free State businessman over the head with a bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold Label whisky.
The fight – over a cigar – went down at a party at the Joburg home of Zizi Kodwa, President Jacob Zuma’s former spin doctor, and in full view of Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema.
Construction company owner Mzwakhe Mofokeng said glass from the bottle, which broke when Maile allegedly threw it at his head, lacerated his neck and he was covered in blood.
City Press was told that Mbalula’s bodyguards had to restrain Maile from inflicting further damage to Mofokeng. But Maile denies ever throwing the bottle, claiming that news of the fight surfaced only after his war of words with Malema this week in which he accused him of being a “drunkard and a womaniser” who depleted the league’s bank account.
“This is an attempt to intimidate me so that I refrain from engaging with the issues we raised as the ANCYL during the course of the week,” he said. “I’m not going to help the forces of darkness to assassinate my character based on unproven allegations.”
