In arid northern Namibia, in the agricultural town of Grootfontein, prayers are being offered for Afrikaans lingerie model Behati Prinsloo and her fiancé, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.
Prinsloo’s parents, Boet, a pastor at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church and Magda, who runs a bed and breakfast, will soon fly to the US to meet Levine, their future son-in-law, who fronts the multiple Grammy Award-winning band.
Although they have never seen him in person, the 34-year-old rocker phoned Boet and Magda to ask for their daughter’s hand in marriage.
“Ja, we are very happy for them,” Boet told City Press. “We have not met Adam yet, but we will fly to Los Angeles to meet him and his family soon.”
He added: “The people of Grootfontein know of Behati’s success and are very proud of her. People are praying for her.”
Magda said they have not yet settled on a wedding date or location, but said: “Behati sounds so incredibly happy.”
The 24-year-old belle grew up in Grootfontein, near the Etosha National Park.
Behati told Fashionista magazine: “I’m an only child and pretty much did kid stuff: gymnastics, track, riding, field hockey. I hung out on my friend’s farm a lot.”
The brunette beauty was discovered by a modelling scout in a grocery store while on holiday with her grandparents, who lived in Goodwood, Cape Town.
She recalled the encounter: “This guy wrote his number on a piece of paper and my grandfather was like: ‘This is so shady.’”
Today, Behati is a top model for the luxury lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret and lives in New York.
“It was tough for them: him (Levine) living in Los Angeles and her in New York,” said Boet.
Behati and Levine started dating in June last year. They broke up earlier this year and Levine was seen frolicking on a Mexican beach with yet another Victoria’s Secret fashion model, Nina Agdal of Denmark, last month. But in a surprise twist, Levine announced his engagement to Prinsloo on Tuesday.
Levine has a thing for Victoria’s Secret models. His ex-girlfriend was former brand angel Karolína Kurková of the Czech Republic. Their relationship ended shortly before he began seeing Prinsloo.
Levine’s publicist Carleen Donovan told People magazine this week: “Adam Levine and his girlfriend Behati Prinsloo are excited to announce they are engaged to be married. The couple recently reunited and Adam popped the question this weekend in Los Angeles.”
Justin Miccoli of the now-defunct Storm Model Management, who first signed Prinsloo in Cape Town, said: “She went off to the UK to work with Storm London. It all happened so fast for her. In just months, she was at the top. We were delighted.
“We love Behati and she is a great asset to all South African models and agencies.”
Miccoli, who now runs 3D Model Agency in Cape Town, described Behati as “a modern-day Claudia Schiffer (the German model and creative director of her own clothing label)”.
