Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa says he would have picked a team similar to the one picked by the club’s supporters for the Carling Black Label Cup against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
The off-season derby takes place at FNB Stadium and Pirates are the defending champions, having also won the inaugural event in 2011.
Addressing the media ahead of the clash, De Sa said: “It has been a little difficult in getting the team together but we have an idea of what the team will be like on Saturday. We want to win it as much as our fans and they have chosen a pretty balanced team. We are pleased with all the players selected.”
While a guest coach will be in charge of the team in the opening half, De Sa said they will still be assessing the side for when he and his Chiefs counterpart, Stuart Baxter, take over in the second half.
“It is a preseason game, and, nevertheless, it’s still a derby,” said De Sa, who ended his debut season in charge of Pirates empty-handed last season.
Commenting on his new signings, strikers Lennox Bacela from Bloemfontein Celtic and Kermit Erasmus from SuperSport United, De Sa said the two will add what the team lacked during their futile run last season.
“They are good acquisitions and they will help us in the areas we lacked. Lennox will give us the mobility and Kermit is scoring all the time.”
The coach said the Black Label Cup game will help his side with preparations ahead of their next CAF group stage fixture against Al Ahly in Egypt on August 4.
But he said they would still enquire about Erasmus’ eligibility as he has already represented SuperSport in a CAF competition – the Confederations Cup – in the same calendar year and is likely to be deemed cup-tied.
The starting line-ups as they were voted in by the fans from the two teams are:
