The ANC would not comment on a report that it was struggling to pay a service provider.

“Any matter between us and any company is between us only and no one else. We won’t comment on such,” said African National Congress spokesperson Jackson Mthembu today.

The Mail & Guardian reported that the ANC had reached a “secret” out-of-court settlement with an events company it owed R11 million for organising its centenary celebrations last year.

The settlement agreement allowed the ANC to pay off the money to the organisers, the VWV Group, over a year, starting in April this year, the publication reported.

According to the report, the ANC had not yet started paying and asked for more time to raise money. A revised schedule of payments was drawn up and the first payment was expected to be made shortly.

The VWV Group brought its liquidation application against the ruling party to the high court in Johannesburg in December after it failed to pay.

According to the Mail & Guardian, many artists and companies contracted by the events company to help stage the celebrations had not been paid all the money owed to them, apparently as a result of the ANC’s nonpayment.
