Three men were arrested for being in possession of abalone (perlemoen) worth an estimated R33 million.

The haul, weighing about 1.6 tons, was found on a farm about 10km from Alexandria yesterday after police were alerted, Eastern Cape police Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said today.

Two of the men were Chinese nationals while the third was the farm’s owner. The abalone and equipment, such as electric fans, freezers, gas cylinders and burners were seized.

The men would appear in the Alexandria Magistrates’ Court, near Kenton-on-Sea, on Monday.
