Senator Ayo Akinyelure, the senator representing the Ondo Central Senatorial district in the National Assembly, wept unashamedly in the public for being the only South-West senator who vot4ed for the inclusion of underage marriage in the constitution.
Upon sensing the anger of the council leaders he represents in the senate, he prostrated, weeping and begging, telling them that he voted for the amendment in error.
He said he voted in error and that he wouldn’t ordinarily have voted in favor of the constitutional inclusion of the underage marriage age.
He went on to promise that he would do everything within his power to fight against the amendment and to ensure that it wasn’t passed into law.
Leaders and stakeholders (especially the women) in the six council areas in the Ondo Central Senatorial District expressed their disappointment and shock at finding out Akinyelure was the only senator in the South West zone of Nigeria to support the “inhuman decision”.
