Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has confirmed former minister Ngconde Balfour’s resignation as chairperson of the Boxing SA board.
In a telephonic interview, he said: “I’ve just been informed of this (Balfour’s resignation) and will make further pronouncements on this matter next week.”
When City Press contacted Balfour for comment earlier, he said, before a question could be asked: “Let me be decent, I’m not going to talk to anybody and I would like us to respect that.”
He then dropped the call.
Balfour is the fourth board member to jump ship at the beleaguered sporting body following last year’s resignation of former boxing commentator Dumile Mateza, Nontstantsa Lebaka and Thabani Khumalo.
Last night, a workshop that was scheduled to take place tomorrow between the regulator and registered promoters was “postponed until further notice”.
City Press understands that the meeting, which angered promoters, was called off at the eleventh hour, following Balfour’s resignation.
A promoter who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was about time the “minister consult us boxing stakeholders, because we know who should head that board”.
