An Eastern Cape senior traditional leader has likened the AmaMpondo nation’s initiation death toll to genocide.
Bizana community leader Ndumiso Hlongwa said the high initiate death rate could be called “genocide as our people are slashed to death in these mountains“, the Dispatch Online reported today.
“Let’s stop this [initiation custom] altogether or have a break for a couple of years where we look at what went wrong in this nation,” Hlongwa was quoted as saying.
“We need to consult with other nations in the AmaXhosa and Sesotho people to learn how this should be done.”
The Dispatch Online reported that since 2006, 462 initiates have died in the Eastern Cape with the majority of them from the AmaMpondo nation.
In June, 21 of the 39 initiates who died in the province were from the AmaMpondo nation.
Eastern AmaMpondo king Mpondombini Sigcau had also called for the initiation to be suspended.
