A first half wonder goal by Bongani Ndulula handed AmaZulu a 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in their Absa Premiership match at FNB Stadium.

Pirates yesterday dominated the first half, and were stunned by the Ndulula goal just after the half hour mark, despite a period of total control from the home side.

The Buccaneers continued to keep a stranglehold on the match until the final whistle, but could not convert any of the countless chances they created.

Coach Roger de Sa will rue the poor finishing of his forwards, and will have to put things right in a hurry for their MTN8 cup game against SuperSport United on Sunday.

In the third minute, Kermit Erasmus, with a well-timed shot, forced a good save from Aubrey Mathibe in the AmaZulu goal.

Four minutes later, after AmaZulu failed to clear a harmless ball from a William Twala corner, the shot fell to Oupa Manyisa just outside the area but his effort was sprayed wide.

On the half hour mark, Twala whipped the ball in for Happy Jele, but from close range he could not keep his shot down as it flew over goal.

Against the run of play, a moment of individual brilliance gave the visitors the lead in the 31st minute.

A stunning run from Ndulula left the Pirates defence in his wake, before he calmly slotted home to make it 1-0 to AmaZulu.

Pirates responded with a flurry of attempts, with the first falling to Erasmus in the 34th minute. Erasmus tried his luck with a shot from the edge of the area but was wayward with his attempt.

Two minutes later, Collins Mbesuma, with a good turn and shoot, forced a reaction save from Mathibe.

Twala received the perfect ball ahead of the AmaZulu defence and ran into the right hand side of the box, and with just the keeper to beat, crossed for a team mate who was not there as the ball dribbled out of play in the 38th minute.

Pirates probed again a minute before the break, when a Sifiso Myeni free kick was directed into the box, Erasmus made good contact with the cross but again, was just over.

Erasmus made his way to the edge of the box in the 55th minute, and his well-struck shot was blocked by Mathibe.

On the hour mark, Erasmus made a bustling run into the box but once again Mathibe stood firm for the visitors and denied Pirates the equaliser.

In the 76th minute, Happy Jele spurned an opportunity to pull a goal back. Erasmus delivered the ball into the left side of the box, and Jele with just the keeper to beat scuffed his shot across the face of goal.
