translux bus They prayed, screamed, when bus crashed through barrier

Fifteen passengers prayed aloud and screamed this morning when their Translux bus to Pretoria on the M1 near the Empire bridge in Johannesburg slipped on the road, swerved and burst through the bridge’s barrier.

The crashed bus, which caused a serious traffic jam, is still hanging partly off the edge of the bridge.

The passengers, among whom is a mother with a baby, kicked the back window out and climbed to safety. No one was injured, but all are in severe shock.

They would have travelled from Park Station to Pretoria.

Emergency services at the scene said they suspected that the bus skidded in the wet weather and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Police said that it might also have been caused by oil on the road.

Rain hit Pretoria and Johannesburg because of a strong cold front from the Cape.
