An escaped mental patient has been arrested in connection with a hijacking in Mahikeng.

“He hijacked a 66-year-old victim on August 8 at about 10.30am in the morning at a car wash next to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital,” North West police captain Pelonomi Makau said yesterday.

Community members who saw the incident helped the woman to chase the man.

“The suspect was later found involved in a car accident with another vehicle in Mahikeng town,” said Makau.

The man was arrested at the scene. It was then established that he was a patient at the hospital.

Makau said the man escaped from the hospital. He had put on his clothes on top of the hospital clothing.

“The ambulance was called and the suspect was transported back to the hospital for treatment where he is still under police guard,” said Makau.

A case of hijacking and reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
