One of Cosatu’s biggest affiliates, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), has raised concern over the way a special meeting of the trade union body has been called.

The special central executive committee meeting, which will decide whether Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi should face a disciplinary hearing for having sex with a junior colleague, was called by Vavi’s deputy, Bheki Ntshalintshali.

Speaking at a funeral in Ga-Rankuwa, west of Pretoria, Numsa president Cedric Gina said: “When I was sitting down there and comrade Vavi was introduced, I remembered that the letter that invited us to a special central executive committee was not signed by the general secretary.

It was signed by the deputy.

“That is a matter that we will put to the central executive committee because we have just seen the general secretary of Cosatu speaking here, and he is not incapacitated. So why is the special committee’s invitation signed by the deputy?”

Vavi, who also attended the funeral, said nothing on the matter.

Carl Cloete, Numsa’s deputy secretary, added that anyone within the federation who has not sinned, must cast the first stone at Vavi.

Gina said Numsa would call a press conference tomorrow to talk about what should happen at the meeting.
