Meyiwa Pirates snatch victory over SuperSport on penalties

Orlando Pirates edged SuperSport United 4-3 on penalties in the MTN8 quarterfinal match at the Mbombela Stadium today.

The match ended 2-2 after extra time forcing the game to a dreaded penalty shootout.

Thabo September’s penalty reaffirmed the need for goal-line technology as the ball hit the cross bar and replays showed the ball could have crossed the line but the referee disallowed the goal.

Earlier, in the 31st minute, SuperSport broke the deadlock thanks to an own goal.

Thabo September’s long throw-in was miscued by Thabo Matlaba, who beat his own keeper with a header, giving United the lead.

Bacela should have levelled matters in the 42nd minute, Daine Klate’s well taken corner eluded everyone but the Pirates substitute’s header flew wide off Williams’ goal.

The second half was a much more open affair with both teams going all out in attack as United looked to consolidate while Pirates chased the game.

Meyiwa rescued Pirates in the 56th minute as he stretched fully to tip out a Phala low strike.

Former United striker Kermit Erasmus worked his way past a number of SuperSport defenders and setup Bacela who made no mistake as he hammered the ball into the back of the net in the 61st minute.

Three minutes into extra time, United reclaimed the lead with Mogogi Gabonamong who did well to hold his nerve before firing past Lucky Lekgwathi who was on the goal line, 2-1.

In the second half of extra time, Thulasizwe Mbuyane found the byline and pulled the ball back for Bacela who fired past Williams to make it 2-2 in the 113th minute.

SuperSport were reduced to ten-man in the 117th minute, leftback Sibusiso Khumalo was sent off following a second yellow card for foul on Bucs fullback Happy Jele.

Williams missed SuperSport’s first spotkick but made up for that by saving Jali’s penalty and Lekgwathi scored the winning penalty for Pirates.

The win means Pirates join Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars for the semifinals.
