GEES Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Company has unveiled a $5 000 sponsorship for the Victoria Falls Social Soccer League tournament.
The winners of the tournament will receive a new kit with other teams in the 18-team league getting different prizes. The sponsorship was unveiled at Victoria Falls Sports Club yesterday.
In an interview after the ceremony, the company manager, Asheer Ranchod said they decided to invest in the growth of soccer in the resort town as part of their social responsibility programme.
“This is just the beginning of a great relationship between us and the social soccer league. We hope to make this tournament an annual event. We have discovered that there are many youngsters playing in the social league that need to be motivated to develop their careers so that one day they will break into Division One and Premier Soccer League,” he said.
Manqaliso Gibson Sibanda, the chairperson of the league said the donation was good for the development of soccer in the resort town.
He said the league which was in its second year, had plans to increase the number from 18 as they were working on plans to include teams from outside Victoria Falls.
“This is a good day for the league. We are grateful to Gees and we hope other companies in this town would emulate your example,” said Sibanda.
The tournament kicked off yesterday and is expected to end next week when the winners will be presented with their prizes.
