THE perennial financial woes which have always rocked the Zifa Central Soccer League have once again come to haunt the region after three clubs were expelled from the league for not being in good standing with the region. The three clubs all debutants – Tripple B Academy, Kwekwe Pirates and Gwanda Ramblers failed to pay up their outstanding affiliation fees by 31 July, a deadline which had been agreed on by the region’s assembly held during the mid-season break.
The league’s acting secretary Stanley Chapeta confirmed the expulsion of the three clubs.
“The clubs should consider themselves expelled because when the assembly met during the mid-season break, it was agreed that they should pay up their outstanding arrears by 31 July and failure to do so the matches will be forfeited on a three nil scoreline,” he said.
The final nail for the beleaguered clubs will be confirmed next week as according to the region’s constitution, failure by the region’s affiliate to fulfill three consecutive fixtures warrants automatic expulsion.
Over the past three seasons since the region’s inauguration in 2010, clubs have either folded or been expelled from the league for financial reasons or failing to pay affiliation fees.
Border Strikers were expelled in the league in the maiden CSL season after failing to pay affiliation fees while Gweru Pirates followed suit the following season.
Last season a record seven teams pulled out of the league with the majority citing financial constraints as the reason for their failure to participate in the league.
Last season saw Zvishavane based Zialanda throwing the towel midway through the season due to financial challlenges. The latest crisis has since affected the smooth flow of the league and former premiership outfit, Hardbody, has benefited from the expulsion as it was in the relegation zone.
The Gweru outfit will only start playing in Week 19 as their matches since league action resumed were against the expelled clubs.
Hardbody were supposed to play Tripple B Academy on their opening account after the mid-season break followed by a match against Kwekwe Pirates and then Gwanda Ramblers.
