Race very tight in TNM Super League

With just two games left to wrap up the first round of the 2013/14 TNM Super League season, the race is very tight involving the top five teams, leaders Red Lions, second-placed Mighty Wanderers, Blue Eagles (3rd), Kamuzu Barracks (4th) and Azam Tigers (5th).

Red Lions, Wanderers and Blue Eagles tie on 24 points but the Lions lead the table on goal difference. Kamuzu Barracks are just one point behind while Tigers are three points behind the three front runners.

Defending champions defence campaign on a bad foot having won four of the 12 games played, drawing four and also losing four.

Last season’s runners-up Big Bullets are on position six with 19 points but they have played less games — 11 in which they won five, drew four and lost two.

At the bottom are the usual suspects — newly promoted teams. Mzuzu United beat fellow rookies Evirom 3-1 last week to move from position 15 to 13 while Mponela United drew with Mafco 1-1 but still are 14th.

Mzuzu have now won two games, drew two and lost eight, Mponela won once, drew four times and lost six while Evirom won once, drew thrice and lost seven.

Looking behind their shoulders to avoid relegation are 12th-placed Mafco, who are just two points ahead of Mzuzu United and three ahead of Mponela.

Blantyre United are 11th and just four points behind Mzuzu United while 10th-placed Moyale are five points ahead of the Mzuzu rookies.

The race is also tight for the Golden Boot award. Top scorers Epac’s Ishmael Thindwa, Blantyre United’s Muhammad Sulumba and Red Lions’ Dickson Mbetewa Jnr all have scored six goals while Moyale’s Gastin Simkonda and Crispin Fukizi tie on five goals.

Ten players have each scored three goals and the interesting candidate is Peter Katsonga from rookies Mzuzu United. There are no Super League games this weekend to pave way for the Carlsberg Cup round of 16 matches.

Today, Big Bullets face Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium, Kamuzu Barracks date Blue Eagles at Dedza Stadium, Kabwafu meet Moyale at Mzuzu Stadium, while Mponela will be up against Mzuni at Silver Stadium.

Tomorrow, Red Lions date Mighty Wanderers at Zomba Community Centre in what will be a game of revenge for the Lions. The Nomads broke Red Lions’ unbeaten run in the TNM Super League.

Blantyre United will face Civo at Kamuzu Stadium from 12pm to be followed by Azam Tigers against Mafco from 2pm. On Tuesday, Evirom meet Bvumbwe at Kamuzu Stadium.
