Unite Mandela We gained a lot out of Afcon finalists – Gordon Igesund

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund said the team has gained a lot out of their two matches against Nigeria and Burkina Faso this week.

Bafana beat Burkina Faso 2-0 in the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day at FNB Stadium this afternoon, two days after they lost to Nigeria in the Mandela Challenge midweek.

Igesund said their win was a confidence booster going into their penultimate 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Botswana in two weeks time.

“We gained a lot out of the two games against the African champions and the runners-up,” said the Bafana trainer during the post-match conference.

“We kept the ball much better today, created a lot of chances and only scored two. I am happy the we are creating chances a lot but there is still a lot of work to do.”

Siphiwe Tshabalala and Lerato Chabangu scored in each half in a Bafana team that was made up of locally-based players.

Igesund handed debut caps to Marc van Heerden of AmaZulu, Luyolo Nomandela from Free State Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Bongani Zungu.

“We tried out fringe players and there is room for improvement,” he said.

Bafana need to beat Botswana on September 7 and hope Ethiopia falter against Burkina Faso on the same day to qualify for the next round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Igesund said there will be a though fight for places in the team to face Botswana with overseas-based players such as Dean Furman, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Thulani Serero and Daylon Claasen.

He said he will try and get players as long as possible for camp if they are available.

The match against Botswana will be played at Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban.
