In January, she sang at an event celebrating President Obama’s inauguration – as far as gigs go, that’s major.
She’s won nine SA Music Awards and performed at the Fifa 2010 World Cup opening concert, but Lerato ‘Lira’ Molapo was not content with conquering the local market.
She and her husband/manager Robin Kohl are a formidable team, creating clever marketing strategies such as recording a 2009 live concert, which knocked Celine Dion off the No.1 spot on the best-selling live DVD list.
Essence magazine named Lira one of the five unique artists who will change music in 2012, she graced the cover of L’Uomo Vogue’s ‘Rebranding Africa’ issue, performed at the Teatro Del Greco in Italy (the last African on that stage was Miriam Makeba) and received a BET Award nomination for best international artist.
All of this is far removed from the accounting career for which she studied.
Lira credits a middle-aged banker she met on her 21st birthday with giving her the push she needed.
‘He told me he would’ve liked to have been a soccer coach. I realised I was young enough to follow my passion instead of regretting it later.’
As Lira’s dreams get bigger, so do the stages – and there are no limits.
‘Irrespective of how long it takes, I will have a mindset of possibility.’
