Controversial businessman Kenny Kunene has not resigned from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
“Kunene has not left the party … he has asked to be relieved of his leadership responsibilities,” said EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
According to reports today, Kunene had quit as the EFF’s head of campaigns, mobilisation, and special projects.
Ndlozi said Kunene remained a member of the party.
In July, Kunene said he was going into politics full-time as a member of the EFF, led by expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema.
Kunene wrote a scathing open letter to President Jacob Zuma before joining the EFF, criticising his leadership and referred to Zuma as “a monster and a tyrant”.
Last month, City Press reported that Kunene was slapped with a R750 000 tax bill because he hasn’t submitted any personal tax returns since 2010.
Kunene accused the SA Revenue Service of being used by the ANC to settle political scores.
