Malawi’s poets’ festival in the offing

Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) a body of poets has come to the limelight announcing that they will be launching their festival dubbed Land of Poets.

The body’s publicity secretary Sylvester Kalizang’oma on Sunday said that this is a gathering they have been working on for several years.

“As poets we have been hosting Chisinda Cha Ndakatulo for years and now with the experience we have got, we believe we can host a festival. With the festival we will have lots of activities including workshops for poets to learn,” said Kalizang’oma.

He said the festival will take place on September 21-22 this year at Blantyre Cultural Centre (BCC).

“This will be an international festival where we will be bringing both local and international poets. But this year we will only have local poets,” he said.

According to a letter of introduction written by Pam’s vice president Jacinta Chisi, Land of Poets is an annual gathering of poets, literary players and poetry lovers both local and international in an interesting environment aimed at commemorating, celebrating and promoting the oldest art of literature.

She said this year they are holding it in September but their target is to be holding it in July as part of Independence celebrations. Kalizang’oma said the Royal Norwegian Embassy through the Cultural Support Scheme has pumped in K1.2 million.

He said they were yet to talk to the ministry over the festival but said this is a rare gathering and that it is not falling within the same dates with other festivals.

The poet said some companies have shown willingness to support them and urged others to come up to uplift poetry in the country.
