London – Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed he expects Gareth Bale to join Real Madrid before the transfer window closes.
Bale’s long-awaited move to the Bernabeu has been delayed by wrangles over the terms of the transfer fee, while Tottenham were also keen to conclude their own signings before officially selling the Wales winger.
But, with the transfer window due to close this evening, the deal is finally set to be announced and Villas-Boas, speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at north London rivals Arsenal, said Bale would definitely be joining the Spanish giants.
“The player is a wonderful player, he is joining Real Madrid,” Villas-Boas said.
“We wish him all the best and he leaves us with wonderful memories from last season.”
All the talk about Bale’s impending move, reportedly for a world record price of over £85 million, has not been a distraction for Spurs according to Villas-Boas, who claimed he was just happy the club had reinvested the fee on new players.
Spurs have signed seven new players for over £100 million since the end of last season.
“It was not a distraction. We have gone on with our work since we went to Hong Kong when he (Bale) was injured in pre-season. We have done our transfer activity,” Villas-Boas added.
“Lots of clubs have this type of transfer situation. Tottenham have made some great investments which come from the Bale money.”
