Woodhead Amber Ale from Devil’s Peak Brewing Company in Cape Town
What An American pale ale (5% alcohol) with more body and caramel richness. ‘It has a moderate hop aroma with malt presence and is a perfectly balanced beer,’ says Dan Badenhorst, co-founder and owner of Devil’s Peak.
How Serve with a cheeseburger – something with a strong cheese like Emmenthal, blue cheese or Gruyère. Venison would also work well, so perhaps a venison burger.

Bohemian pilsner from Standeaven Brewery in Durban
What An unfiltered lager (4%) made in the typical Pilsner style. ‘It has a clean, peaked bitterness to get the taste buds going,’ founder Shaun Standeaven says. ‘It’s a great beer for a hot day.’

Farmer’s draught from Brauhaus am Damm in Rustenburg
What A blond-coloured lager (4.2%) in the style of the beer enjoyed in the famous beer halls of Bavaria, says Brauhaus beer master Imke Pape. ‘It’s a real drinking beer, with a crisp, dry, pleasantly soft finish.’
How A light beer like this one with its delicate flavours combines well with light food such as salads, seafood, chicken and pork.

Golden blonde from De Garve Brewery in Vanderbijlpark
What An American-style ale (4.5%) with a golden colour, smooth taste and light hops flavour, says De Garve’s beer master Patrick van den Bon.
How Pizza will work ‘but beer also pairs well with cheese – I serve cheese with all six of my beers.’ For Golden Blonde he recommends a slice of Gouda.

Emperor Indian pale ale from Drayman’s Brewery in Pretoria
What This pale ale (4%) has hop accents with citrus tastes like lime, lemon and grapefruit, owner Moritz Kallmeyer says. ‘It has a refreshingly bitter aftertaste.’
How The perfect pairing is a succulent Karoo lamb chop. The citrus notes will cut through the fat.

Serve beer with food that has the same complexity, or with something from the opposite side of the spectrum – for example a simple dish with a complex beer.
