ICT Trends–Banks team up with mobile phone operators

Banks in Botswana are shifting focus to team up with mobile phone operators to enable customers to pay their subscriptions and buy services through mobile phone networks, linked with banks.

Recently, postal service provider, BotswanaPost and Barclays Bank have signed an agreement that will enhance service delivery on the purchasing of electricity via internet banking.

The partnership would enable customers to access the service and anytime they need electricity. Malebogo Sebusang of Barclays said the product will be a 24/7 service and will enable their customers to buy electricity without hassles and long queues, as it has been the case.

Other services offered by mobile phone operators include among others paying for subscriptions, water bills, and purchasing of internet bundles and airtime for mobile phones. Botswana has three mobile phone service providers.
