Girls’ killings: ‘Those responsible should rot in jail’

The Gauteng community safety portfolio committee has expressed shock and sadness at the rape and killing of two girls in Katlehong and Diepsloot.

Keabetswe Tshabalala (4) went missing on Sunday afternoon, and was found hanged in Katlehong yesterday, said Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

He said police would determine whether she was raped before being killed.

Five-year-old Anelise Mkhondo, who went missing on Saturday, was found dead beneath a pile of rubble in Diepsloot, also yesterday.

She was thought to have been suffocated with a plastic bag, he said.

The abuse and rape of young girls seemed to have become the norm and it could not be tolerated, committee chairman Jacob Khawe said in a statement today.

“We condemn the barbaric killing of innocent lives and those responsible should rot in jail,” he said.

Khawe urged local residents to work with the police to ensure women and children were protected.

“We call upon members of the community to work with the police and give information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.”

He sent his condolences to the families and friends of both girls.
