DA admits to distributing flyers with ANC logo

Northwest DA leader Chris Hattingh has admitted that the DA has distributed a pamphlet bearing an ANC logo.

This came as the ANC accused the DA of dirty electioneering in Tlokwe by printing and distributing pamphlets that looked like ANC pamphlets but instead carried an anti-ANC message.

Hattingh said the message inside listed the alleged wrongs done by ANC mayor Maphetle Maphetle, saying this was what would happen should the ANC win Tlokwe again.

ANC chief whip Stone Sizani said in the statement he read out at a press conference in Parliament this morning that the DA suspected the pamphlet was “ordered from the top” because the party has been quiet on this.

The ANC called it a “blatant violation” of the Electoral Act by the DA’s Tlokwe representatives. “We call to the party to publicly condemn such illegal acts and assure South Africans that they will play clean in next year’s elections,” he said.

He said the pamphlets were “a sign of desperation” by the DA and he urged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to investigate.

IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela could not immediately be reached for comment as her phone was off.

By-elections are set to take place in Tlokwe next week in nine wards after ANC councillors were expelled from the party for voting against their mayor.

Although their expulsions were later reversed, some of these councillors are standing as independent candidates against the ANC.

On Friday, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini is expected to launch a massive food welfare programme in Tlokwe. The DA has labelled this as electioneering.
