Award-winning hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar’s South Africa tour has been postponed to next year.
Lamar was scheduled to appear in South Africa this November and a change in the concert dates was announced today by tour promoters Airey Scott and Miller Genuine Draft.
Lamar will instead support Kanye West on an upcoming tour of the US following the release of his Yeezus album, with tour dates that coincided with the South Africa tour.
Publicist Melanie Ramjee said both parties agreed on the new dates in February and March and saw it as “an opportunity that he could not miss and we understood”.
Ramjee assured music lovers that he was still coming to the country, adding that the one thing she wanted fans to not think was that Lamar “was undermining us as Africans”.
The organisers have apologised for the inconvenience and gave those who bought tickets the option either to return them for a full refund or exchange them at Computicket for the new dates.
Ramjee says they are working on something big for fans in the run-up to next year.
“We know (that) fans are disappointed, but still don’t want a quiet five months before the concerts,” she said.
But not all fans were too disappointed and shared their optimism:
Thank you @MGD_SA the new K. Lamar dates are much better. We have more time to cram lyrics before the show
