Close to 26 000 patients were admitted to state mental hospitals across the country last year, according to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
There were 25 988 admissions in 2012/13 and 30 628 the year before, he said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.
The admissions, in all nine provinces, were for “various periods” and included forensic patients.
Motsoaledi said the budget for building and maintenance of “mental hospitals and designated hospitals” was R427 million in 2011/12 and R347 million in 2012/13.
Of this, total amounts of R174.8 million and R202.1 million, respectively, were actually spent.
