Pirates stutter to 1-0 win over Polokwane

A 63rd minute goal from Rooi Mahamutsa helped a struggling Orlando Pirates side to a narrow 1-0 victory over Polokwane City in their Premiership match at Orlando Stadium.

Pirates had countless chances throughout the match with most of the players resorting to speculative long range attempts. Mahamutsa happened to find the target just after the hour mark and saved the blushes for The Buccanneers against a coachless Polokwane side.

Polokwane parted ways with coach Duncan Lechesa on Monday, and physical trainer Eduardo Schoeler took the reins for the encounter with the Soweto giant.

Polokwane produced one meaningful attempt where Pirates keeper Senzo Meyiwa was caught napping, but the home side were completely dominant for the majority of the match which they should have won by a comfortable margin.

Earlier, Pirates had the first chance right after the first whistle. Oupa Manyisa snapped up a loose ball in the area and splayed his shot across the face of goal.

Tlou Segolela tried his luck from range in the ninth minute, with a left footed swipe which was lofted into the stands.

Kermit Erasmus also had a dab at goal just after the quarter hour mark with a long range effort, but he too could not keep the shot down.

In the 20th minute, a Manyisa free kick found Siyabonga Sangweni unmarked in the box, but his header was a tame effort which lobbed over the crossbar.

Five minutes later, Segolela also went for glory from way out after a good turn of pace and his dipping strike was deflected out for a corner.

Kermit Erasmus had a chance in the 28th minute with a headed attempt that was just wide. Erasmus then turned provider a minute later when he made a bustling run into the box and passed to Aubrey Ngoma, but a couple of scurrying Polokwane defenders got back to clear the danger.

The best chance of the half fell to Polokwane. Thobani Mncwango in first-half injury time was left one-on-one with Meyiwa, but the Pirates keeper pulled off a good reaction save to keep his side level.

In the 56th minute Happy Jele had a close range header cleared off the line from Million Mkhabela to save Polokwane from going behind.

In the 63rd minute a long range effort finally came off for Pirates as they took a 1-0 lead. Allowed to run unhindered from close to the halfway line, Rooi Mahamutsa reeled off a fierce strike from just outside the box which found the left hand side of the goal to give his side the advantage.
