A Joburg man has been arrested after he allegedly threatened to circulate “half-naked” pictures of businessman Linda Moeketsi and tried to con socialite Somizi Mhlongo.
Moeketsi’s close associate, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, said Moeketsi had thrown a lavish party at his Jozi house last Thursday night.
“Apparently his cellphone was stolen by one of the people who attended the party. Moeketsi had saved naked pictures of him in that phone. So on Monday the person who stole the cellphone MMSed Moeketsi these pictures from the stolen cellphone to his other cellphone. After sending the pictures, this person sent him an SMS demanding that he pay him R10 000 immediately, failing which he would circulate them on the net.
“After a few hours this person sent Linda a second picture and warned him not take the matter lightly,” said the close associate.
It is alleged Moeketsi, who was shooting the breeze with his friends at Pyramid Square in Jozi when he received the threats, jumped into his car and drove to Honeydew Police Station where he reported the matter to the police.
Moeketsi, who runs the public relations company that recently organised the Gauteng Sports Awards, confirmed he had reported the matter to the police and said he wished the suspect would rot in jail.
Speaking to City Press, Moeketsi said he realised the day after the party his BlackBerry was missing.
“I did not worry much because I thought that I might have misplaced it in the house,” he said.
Moeketsi said he was shocked when he received a message sent from the missing cellphone on Monday.
When he opened the message he was greeted by a half-naked picture of himself.
He said he later received a text message from the sender in which he demanded R10 000 and threatened to circulate the pictures if he did not co-operate.
“I took pictures of myself wearing underwear at the gym as I was trying to check if I had lost weight,” he said. I was not completely naked,” he said.
Moeketsi said he ignored the first message, but realised the matter was getting out of hand when he received a call from Somizi, a friend, who asked him how much money he wanted.
“When I told him I did not know what he was talking about, he told me he received a BBM from the same cellphone in which I asked him to eWallet me R3 000. When I received a second message in which the sender threatened to publish my pictures on the net, I quickly went to the police station and reported the case,” he said.
Moeketsi said after reporting the matter to the police he went to BlackBerry offices and asked them to help him trace the gadget.
“They were able to trace the cellphone to Honeydew. The police were informed and the suspect was arrested on Tuesday,” he said.
Somizi couldn’t be reached for comment at the time of publication.
Honeydew police spokesperson Karen Jacobs confirmed the arrest.
