Hijackings up in Gauteng

Vehicle hijackings in Gauteng increased by two percent in the past financial year, premier Nomvula Mokonyane has said.

“Officers have now shifted focus from vehicle and driver fitness only, but have also included apprehending criminals that use road networks to escape from scenes of crime,” Mokonyane told reporters in Johannesburg today.

Mokonyane was releasing the province’s 2012/13 crime statistics, from April 2012 to March 2013.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced yesterday that on a national scale, car hijacking increased by 5.4% over the same period.
