Boks need to focus on the basics – Heyneke Meyer

The Springboks’ travelling schedule is behind their inability to string two good performances together, coach Heyneke Meyer has said.

Meyer’s team, which should register a full bill of health come Saturday for their clash with Australia, have been on a bit of an up and down, even though they have lost only one test match this year with an improvement in their attacking game.

That loss came against the All Blacks at Eden Park two weeks ago, a game that was overshadowed by Romain Poite’s officiating.

“I don’t want to make excuses but we are the only team that plays three consecutive away games in the Rugby Championship. It is a big load but we’ve handled it very well. If you win two from three on the road and also get a bonus point, that leaves you with a good chance at home,” Meyer said.

“There are aspects of play that I’m not happy with but I think we’ve had a great season up until now but that doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win the next two matches.”

The Springboks need a bonus point win and hope that Argentina spring a surprise on the All Blacks on Rosario on Sunday morning if they want to keep the tournament alive come October 5 when New Zealand comes knocking at Ellis Park.

Meyer’s focus is that of the short-term for the Newlands clash, saying that the team needs to win before anything else. He was quick to point out that the team was over the Auckland debacle.

“It was tough for me and I don’t want to speak about that game personally but specifically they came away with five points. Had they got four and we got one, we would just have to win our two home games and find ourselves in a great position. However, that’s history now and we have to put that game behind us,” Meyer said.

“We don’t want to go for the bonus point; that will take care of itself. We need to focus on the basics and just play the same type of game that we usually play. Australia are more motivated when they come off a big loss but we can’t look past this game because if we do so it could make the last game useless.
