The Zoo Construction Department of Colchester Zoo, widely acknowledged to be one of the finest zoos in Europe, has purchased a new Bobcat S175 skid-steer loader from Bobcat of London, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for London, Essex, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Middlesex in the UK.
The new S175 skid-steer loader has replaced a Bobcat 763 skid-steer loader purchased in 1999 by the Zoo, which is set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes next to the Maldon Road, outside Colchester in Essex. The 763 loader had provided sterling service over the last 14 years and as a testament to the reliability and durability of Bobcat compact loaders, has entered the next phase of its life at Luton Airport in Bedfordshire, where it will be used primarily to help with snow-clearing work.

Paul Maguire, Estate Manager at Colchester Zoo, said: “We have been using Bobcat skid-steer loaders throughout my 15 years at the zoo and long before that as well. The compact design of the new S175 loader and the 763 model before it is ideal for use in the narrow confines of the zoo. The new S175 skid-steer loader is a true workhorse, turning its hand to a wide range of applications in every part of the site.
“Like all Bobcat loaders, the S175 model is equipped with the quick-change Bob-Tach attachment mounting system, allowing it to be combined with a host of different job-matched attachments. At Colchester Zoo, we use the S175 loader with our Bobcat 3-in-one bucket, breaker, pallet fork, sweeper and trencher attachments, ensuring it is an all year round tool covering jobs such as building work on animal enclosures, utilities and drainage, material handling, repairing surfaces in the car park and snow clearance in the winter.”
With their ability to turn around in their own length and fast cycle times, Bobcat skid-steer, compact tracked and all-wheel steer loaders offer the manoeuvrability and productivity needed to do more work in less time than it takes conventional material-handling equipment. Together with controls that allow for precise movements even in the tightest of spaces, Bobcat compact loaders ensure safe, efficient operation at all times in areas inaccessible to traditional machines.
Formerly from Devon and part of the staff at Colchester Zoo for 14 years now, Paul Langworthy regularly operates the new Bobcat loader and is delighted with its performance: “The 763 loader had a single ram which has been replaced with a double ram on the S175 model. This enhances its capability for loading and unloading materials such as sand, stone and hay in our maintenance yard. We have done so much with the Bobcat loaders, but an interesting application is unloading and placing sand in the Elephant Kingdom. I believe we’ve laid down 300-400 tonne of sand in the last few years, which allows the elephants to take the weight off their feet, reducing the danger of arthritis in their limbs and giving them a comfortable surface on which to sleep. You always know where the elephants have been by the depressions in the sand!”
The Bobcat range of compact loaders covers operating weights from 1268 to 5751 kg and rated operating capacities from 343 to 1584 kg. The new generation 500 platform of Bobcat compact loaders launched at the beginning of 2013 follows on from the introduction of the 600, 700 and 800 series of new generation loaders in the last three years. The new generation loaders have helped to cement Bobcat’s leadership of the compact loader market worldwide, where nearly one out of every two skid-steer loaders on the market is a Bobcat machine.
Based at Grays in Essex, Bobcat of London is responsible in its area for sales and service for Bobcat compact loaders, excavators, telehandlers and utility vehicles. The company also offers for sale over 70 different types of Bobcat attachments that help to deliver versatility and time-saving efficiency across a huge range of applications.
