It’s fair to guess that customs officials at Joburg’s OR Tambo International Airport have seen some unusual footwear – but none so weird as the man they arrested this morning with bags of cocaine strapped to his feet.
SA Revenue Service spokesperson Marika Muller said the passenger was stopped this morning after disembarking from a flight from São Paulo in Brazil.
Muller said he was initially taken in for “additional questions and a search”.
“Nothing was found in his bags or on his body, but when we got him to take off his shoes, the cocaine was taped to the soles of his feet,” she said.
The drugs, valued at R58 502, amounted to 215 grams.
“He was taken for x-rays to check for internal concealments, but that also came back negative.
“He, and the drugs, have been handed over to the SA Police Service to take the criminal case forward.”
