Ladies and gentlemen, please re-start your search engines

Google rewards good content as Hummingbird affects rankings of more than 15 per cent of the world’s websites and changes the rules for the SEO industry

25 November 2013 (Dubai, United Arab Emirates): Google’s 15th birthday present – announced just prior to the recent Search Marketing Expo in New York – was the launch of a brand new algorithm called Hummingbird, which is already affecting the search engine optimisation (SEO) rankings of more than 15 per cent of the world’s websites. The change is also hitting the SEO industry which aims to push its clients to the top of Google online searches by the 540 million monthly users of Google platforms, and highlights and rewards good content and social media connections.

According to Dubai-based digital marketing specialists NEXA – the UAE’s number one ranked SEO specialist – this is the first Google algorithm re-write since 2001 and changes the rules of the SEO platform market, which Forrester research estimates to be worth $1.6B globally by 2016

NEXA CEO, Amit Vyas – who attended the Search Marketing Expo – comments: “Google’s announcement of Hummingbird was a clear game-changer for the SEO industry. Unlike most algorithm updates (Google estimates that approximately 500 algorithm changes are made each year), this was different.  In fact, this wasn’t an algorithm update at all and was a complete replacement of their existing algorithm and has affected the ranking of over 15 per cent of the world’s websites. We recognised this immediately and have advised our SEO clients on the change and our recommended response to this new situation, in order to help websites rank as well as possible. Through Hummingbird, Google appears to be pushing the web towards better quality content rather than poor quality, high volume websites. This presents companies with a new online opportunity.”

Amit Vyas, CEO NEXA

According to NEXA, Hummingbird means keyword density is not as important as creating good quality content by putting greater emphasis on the entire content of a page rather than specific keywords contained within it. Social signals and the use of social media platforms to distribute content will impact how well (or how poorly) a site ranks. Hummingbird reinforces the belief that when people are searching for something on Google, they are looking for answers.

“We have always believed that ‘content is king’ and the search engines want to see consistently good quality content added regularly to websites,” adds Amit Vyas. “With Hummingbird, quality is no longer an option for any website and there is an opportunity to make improvements relatively quickly by creating and hosting content on a website. This could be as simple as adding a blog or news section to an existing website that allows content to be easily uploaded and found by the search engines. Creating the type of content that will help you rank better or ensuring that your social media activities are managed correctly will help your business and content achieve maximum visibility.”
