Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city. Based in the centre of England’s south coast and just over an hour from London, the dynamic city is now a haven for new investment. The waterfront has been stylishly regenerated with more major developments still in the pipeline blending 800 years of history with the 21st century.
Birthplace to many famous people including author Charles Dickens and the fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, Portsmouth is also home to HMS Victory and the Mary Rose – the biggest shipwreck ever to be lifted from the sea bed. The rapidly growing city has a population in excess of 200,000 plus a 23,000 strong student university. There’s 7Km of beach front and the city enjoys a much milder climate than other parts of the UK.
A modern designer retail mall, Gunwharf Quays, situated on the waterfront offers some 95 designer outlets from Jack Wills, Superdry to Cath Kidston and a wide choice of 30 cosmopolitan restaurants, bars and cafés including Jamie Oliver’s Italian and Wagamama’s Japanese restaurant. This makes Gunwharf Quays a top spot for food-lovers and shoppers alike, while the 14-screen cinema, 26-lane bowling complex, comedy club, health and fitness club and casino create a compelling leisure offer. There is also a 165 bedroom hotel and a number of premium residential apartments onsite.
Rising up from the restaurants is the iconic 170m high Spinnaker Tower, a £35 million, UK Millennium Commission sponsored project aimed at transforming the waterfront. It forms the focal point of the £200million regeneration of the Portsmouth Harbour area and has created a new international landmark for the South Coast of Britain.
Portsmouth has further plans for expansion and continued development including more city centre shopping increasing the offer to over 50,000km of retail space as well as new restaurants, cafés, a cinema and residential space. Planning permission has been granted for three new hotels offering almost 500 rooms while new waterfront developments offering 58,000 square metres of commercial space and almost 2,500 new homes, a marina and a country park are in the pipeline.
