Energy consumption is an ongoing issue we face as a society. It readily makes itself known in all facets of our lives from general use, such as lighting and basic electrical use to oversized companies and drilling rigs. While these are large components that lie at the heart of any polished and developed society, this can of course bring about serious complications.
Anything can be overused and abused and energy is by far no exception. While many consider attempts at energy conservation to be centered on preserving monetary strain, this isn’t the only or main benefit. In fact, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) warns that, given the current trends, “energy-related emissions will increase by 70 percent by 2050. This can accelerate the negative consequences of climate change, including higher temperatures and a rise in the frequency of extreme weather events.”
A huge aspect in energy overuse is the increase in the size of what is known as carbon footprint. This is related to the amount of greenhouse gases we allow to build up through a number of various activities including, but not limited to leaving electrical devices running and plugged in when they’re not in use. We utilize far more electricity than what is globally necessary. It is also worth noting that despite our large number of power plants, they on average only turn approximately thirty percent of energy input into useable electricity. This is not only an inefficient use of machinery, but a practice negatively affects and warps the climate.
The increased risk of climate change poses a serious issue, yet its details seem shrouded in mystery to many. Each energy form contributes to total greenhouse gas emissions. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fossil fuel combustion accounts for more than 5,200 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. Overuse will ultimately contribute to a scarcity in this energy supply and an overall increase in the costs of electricity. Over the long term, the rise in demand is predicted to place additional burdens on threatened environmental areas.
