Johannesburg: 3MW In-Pipe Hydropower Scheme

The City of Johannesburg is set to release a tender for a 3 MW in-pipe hydropower scheme, specifically the installation of hydroelectric turbines in its bulk water reticulation system. These turbines could generate up to ten percent of the energy required to power Johannesburg’s city water utility.  The preliminary work on the in-pipe hydropower project has reportedly been completed and the city expects to introduce the first 3 MW of in-pipe power during the first quarter of 2016.
