FAO addresses Pan-African Parliament on unlocking Africa’s agriculture potential

Africa accounts for 45 percent of the world’s surface area suitable for agricultural production. Even with some large arid and semi-arid areas, the continent’s vast water resources are, on average underutilized, with only about 2-3 percent of renewable water resource in use, compared to five percent worldwide. Africa is also home to an abundant supply of labour for agriculture-related products and services. read more

Forest products critical to fight hunger – including insects / New study highlights role of insects for food and feed consumption

Madagascar needs more than $41 million to end locust plague / Half of the country infested by locusts – food production seriously at risk

ROME, Italy, March 26, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ Madagascar needs more than $22 million of emergency funding by June to start fighting a severe locust plague that threatens the country’s next cropping seasons and the food security of more than half the country’s population, FAO said today. The agency underlined, however, that a three-year strategy is needed – requiring an additional $19 million. read more

ROME, Italie, 26 mars 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ Madagascar a besoin d’urgence de plus de 22 millions de dollars d’ici juin pour commencer à lutter contre la terrible invasion de criquets qui menace les prochaines saisons culturales et la sécurité alimentaire de plus de la moitié de la population, indique la FAO. L’Organisation souligne toutefois la nécessité de mettre en œuvre une stratégie sur trois ans, qui requiert 19 millions de dollars supplémentaires. read more

Togo: Le « Cadre de Programmation Pays » validé par la FAO et le gouvernement

Un atelier de validation  nationale du Cadre de programmation par Pays (CPP-Togo) a été  organisé, le 20 décembre 2012 à l’hôtel Sancta Maria à Lomé, conjointement par la FAO (Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture)  et le gouvernement togolais. Cet  atelier fait suite au lancement de formulation du Cadre de Programmation par Pays  qui s’était déroulé le 02 Octobre dernier à Lomé. L’objectif  principal  de l’atelier  est de recueillir les observations  et apports  des différents  acteurs  sur le draft du CPP-Togo  en vue  d’en  tenir compte  dans  l’élaboration  du document final  afin  de créer  des conditions  favorables à l’approbation  nationale  du CPP-Togo  et à sa  mise en œuvre. read more

Zambia’s Agriculture Deputy Minister to Officially Open Regional Food Security Meeting

 

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Zambia, Nicholas Banda will officially open a regional food security policy dialogue taking place in Lusaka, Zambia on the 18th of October 2012. The dialogue, hosted by the Southern Africa Trust is in partnership with the Institute for Democracy (IDASA), an African democracy institute and the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU), will discuss ways to support small-holder farmers in southern Africa so they can increase food production at household level. Dr Chungu Mwila, the Chief Executive Officer of ACTESA-COMESA and Martin Muchero from SADC-FANR Directorate are expected to be part of the discourse together with government officials from SADC countries, farmer associations, members of COMESA and the SADC secretariat. read more
