CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — 12 August 2026 — The South African Artificial Intelligence Association (SAAIA) has announced that leading African law firm Bowmans has joined its Advisory Board, strengthening the organisation’s focus on responsible AI adoption, governance and regulation.
SAAIA brings together practitioners from the commercial, government, academic, startup and NGO sectors to support the development of responsible artificial intelligence in South Africa. The association says it has more than 4,800 members and focuses on the economic and societal opportunities and risks associated with AI.
Bowmans advises clients across Africa on technology-related legal matters, with its AI expertise spanning strategy, governance and policy design, procurement, contracting, product development, workplace deployment, regulatory engagement, implementation, dispute resolution, and ongoing risk and compliance.
The firm’s involvement comes as South Africa develops its policy and regulatory approach to artificial intelligence. Bowmans technology expert Heather Irvine has been appointed by Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi to the Independent Review Panel established to review the country’s AI Policy as it is drafted.
Dr Nick Bradshaw, Chairman of SAAIA, said the organisation’s work is focused on moving beyond the global hype around AI towards practical adoption that reflects South Africa’s specific opportunities and challenges.
“Our vision is evidence based with responsible, human centric AI as its foundation,” Bradshaw said. “The legal, ethical and governance aspects of AI are now arguably the challenge of our time.”
Robby Coelho, a partner at Bowmans, said the firm sees its participation in SAAIA as an opportunity to contribute to the development of Africa’s AI ecosystem.
